Our Beginning
After Fairview Church completed renovations with our facilities, many believed it was only right that we open our some doors to the community for other activities. At that time, our pastor's wife had become involved with the Host Family program which the Folk Arts Centre sponsors. This led her to the idea of having informal sessions where newcomers could practice their English speaking skills.
In addition, many members in our congregation have come from families who immigrated to Canada thus making them aware of the challenges that all newcomers face as they adjust to a new life. It was our desire to extend our love in a practical way to those new in our community. We have advertised in places where English is being offered to international students as well as to refugees/immigrants.
We are more than learning English
Our volunteers, who are the conversation partners on our Friday evenings, have shown patience and understanding. It's been our privilege to have met so many people from many countries. We trust that in a small way we are helping these people become part of our Canadian society.
March 2005 was the beginning of English Café. As you view these pictures we are speaking about "spring and gardening". Our "little Café garden" has grown in these past five years. The casual, friendly atmosphere encourages sharing and making new friends as we learn about our country while exploring a variety of topics.
Thank you to all our participants. Please enjoy this blogspot which depicts some of our activities.
